Pinterest-Inspired First Birthday Photoshoot Fail

I planned my daughter’s first birthday photo shoot months in advance. Everything was set, from her dress and props to the smash cake. I even made my husband plan his outfit so we could take family photos with our dogs. Then, the week of the photoshoot, my Baby G got a runny nose type of cold and a tooth decided to cut through her upper gums. She was cranky, but I didn’t want to reschedule, so I forged ahead with crossed fingers. Mistake number one: Attempting a photoshoot when baby is under the weather. Mistake number two: Not trying on her dress before the day of the pictures. I bought her a big frilly, pink tutu dress with cupcakes on it earlier in the summer. It was too big then, but I figured she would grow into it. Great plan, but it didn’t happen. My daughter is very tall and thin, so a lot of baby clothes for her age don’t fit well. I find that most clothes are made for chubby babies. This was the case with her …

Parenting DIY Activity: Weekly Photo Shoots for Year One Baby Book

I’m obsessed with pictures. Since my daughter was born, I’ve been forcing her to pose for weekly mini photo shoots. I’m compiling them all into a Year One book that I’ll be printing on Shutterfly (Blurb is great too but Shutterfly has adorable baby themes). I purchased baby countdown blocks on Etsy for consistency, however I am really annoyed that on double odd number weeks, like 33, the blocks don’t work because the blocks don’t each have every number on them. So beware. But I digress! Every month, I upload my top photos of Geneveive and start laying out the pages so that I’m not overwhelmed once she turns one-year-old. Each week, I try to capture her doing something that shows her growth, like eating solids, clapping her hands, sitting up and standing. It’s so emotional looking back on all of these things and seeing how much she has changed each week. I encourage other creative moms to do something like a weekly photo shoot book. It’s an awesome keepsake and also makes a great gift for grandparents. My …

4 Reasons Parents Need a Real Camera, Not a Cell Phone, to Take Photos

My brother and his wife are preparing for their first baby and everyday I send them annoying texts about scheduling a newborn photo shoot within the first five days of the baby’s birth and also buying a real camera to take to the hospital. They both think that using their cell phones as cameras is good enough. But it’s not! Here’s why parents need real cameras: Real cameras provide high-res images that are suitable for printing. You need high-res images to print larger photos, like 8x10s. Love the idea of a photo canvas? You can’t make one without a high quality photo! Hoping to make a photo book? Ditto. Cell phones break. This happens all the time. You can drop your phone in the toilet and there goes the first five months of your baby’s life. Everything is lost. Cloud backups aren’t good enough. This is your child we’re talking about. Are you going to trust a third-party service from another company like Dropbox as the only storage of photos for your baby? I save …
